More and more families in Afghanistan are falling into desperate need. Afghanistan is one of the poorest countries in the world. The economy is not growing on its own, but is highly dependent on the international donor community. Poverty and hunger especially threaten the most vulnerable, the sick, the children, and the old. Millions of Afghans are struggling to put food on the table, as decades of war have spread poverty, compounded by one of the worst droughts Afghanistan has ever experienced. According to experts, it is one of the worst droughts in decades in terms of geographic extent. Approximately 14 million people in Afghanistan are affected by a food crisis. Infant mortality in the country is one of the highest in the world. Many children have too little to eat, and some are life-threateningly malnourished.
The political upheaval is not without consequences for the medical care of the people. With the suspension of international funding and the crippled banking sector, medical facilities are coming under even greater pressure. There is a shortage of staff and equipment. Some clinics had to close while others are just barely functioning.
